The Future Library

Hello,

Today we discussed what we would like to have in our "Perfect Library." Now let's turn our thoughts to what the library will look like in 5 years.

What things will we need to do differently?
What services or programs will the library provide in 5 years?
What will the building look or feel like in 5 years?

Please comment below as we think forward about libraries.

Thanks,

Laurie

The library in five years(maybe ten) will have no staff member checking in or checking out items. Completely automated. All items must be RFID. All automatic checkout machines will need to have the option of a person inputting their library card number and a password in order to check out the items.

That's all I have for now.

Like Mary Wagoner said, the library will have to focus more on programs and less on physical materials. We will continue to offer our traditional children's programs like storytime, but they may be updated with technology in some way.

I think the library will have to offer not only e-books but e-readers as well for circulation, to help bridge the digital divide.

The library will have some sort of Fab Lab, like the Fayetteville Free Library http://www.fflib.org/about-us/services/fablab
